On this edition of Living Classical with Tyler Kline: Gentle plucked notes open Eric Chasalow's Second String Quartet, supporting a sustained line passed between the instruments – until petulant outbursts start interrupting the revelry, growing until they take over. Chasalow calls his approach metaclassicism: memories of the iconic quartet repertoire triggered obliquely, then used as a jumping-off point for something new.
Then: For violinist Sarah Plum, a piece isn't finished when you learn it – some of the works on her new album have been in her hands for a decade. She joins Tyler Kline to talk about her new album an expanding distance of multiple voices, about interpretation, advocacy, and what changes when you finally press record.
Along with music by Jocelyn Hagen, Harrison Collins, Helena Maria Falk, Texu Kim, Missy Mazzoli, Juri Seo, Aaron Helgeson, Jeffrey Mumford, and Sidney Corbett.
Featuring performances by violinist Helena Maria Falk; clarinetist Cecilia Kang with pianist Angela Park; clarinetist Eric Umble; Brass for Uncommon Times; Santa Fe Desert Chorale; Lydian String Quartet; Iceland Symphony Orchestra; and Latitude 49.
