On the next Living Classical with Tyler Kline: Breath is something we rarely notice – until we slow down enough to hear it. In Respiratory Cycle, composer Rob Funkhouser builds large-scale music around that simple motion, shaping sound as something that expands, releases, and returns, opening wide sonic spaces that reveal themselves gradually over time. This hour includes a moment from that cycle, Iris Field, inviting close, patient listening.
Then: In portrait RE, composer Igor Santos builds a cinematic sound world from familiar textures and looping patterns – before breaking that surface with the recorded voice of Brazilian philosopher Paulo Freire. What follows is music that interrupts itself, fractures, and insists on attention, tracing the tension between escape and engagement.
Music by Mary Denney, Sebastian Zhang, Ted Hearne, Rob Funkhouser, Charles Daniels, David Crowell, Hitomi Oba, Chiyoko Szlavnics, David Acevedo, Igor Santos, Natalie Dietterich, and Caroline Shaw.
Featuring performances by saxophonist Nick May with pianist Alex Siu Lun Li; pianist Adam Tendler; pianists Charissa Garrigus and Brenna Green; guitarists Daniel Lippel and Mak Grgic; pianist Vanessa Wagner; and ensembles Borderlands Ensemble, Calliope Brass, Ensemble Contrechamps, Ensemble Dal Niente, and KC VITAs.
Join Tyler Kline for this edition of Living Classical – where attention, interruption, and breath shape the music of our time.
